Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, were present at Pope Leo XIV’s first Mass

On May 18, 2025, Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance attended the historic inaugural Mass of Pope Leo XIV in St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City. The event marked the beginning of the papacy of the first American-born pope, Robert Francis Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV. The Mass drew an estimated 200,000 attendees, including numerous global leaders and dignitaries.

During the ceremony, Vice President Vance and his wife were seated prominently among other international figures. Following the Mass, the couple had a brief interaction with Pope Leo XIV. A moment where Vance patted the Pope on the shoulder garnered attention on social media, with some viewers interpreting it as overly casual. Despite the online discourse, the Vances appeared composed and shared moments of affection during the service.

The following day, Vice President Vance, accompanied by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and their spouses, met with Pope Leo XIV at the Apostolic Palace. In this private audience, Vance presented the Pope with a Chicago Bears jersey bearing “Pope Leo XIV” and delivered a letter from President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, inviting the Pope to visit the White House. The meeting was described as cordial, with discussions covering bilateral relations, religious freedom, and international issues.
